Hip pain can be a real concern, especially for women after menopause when the thigh bone (femur) is more susceptible to degeneration. However, the good news is we can detect this early for you, keeping you active and doing what you want with less or no pain.
Hip Pain: More Than Just a Hip Issue
Hip pain can originate from the hip joint itself, but it can also be a symptom of problems in your back, knees, or even feet. Much of the time people remain totally unaware that their foot or their back is the problem. This makes it hard for patients to pinpoint the source of the pain. Here at the Living Centre Clinic in Raynes Park, Wimbledon, we have nearly 40 years of experience of untangling these complexities and more important of all, to deliver the correct treatment for your hip problem.
Hip Stiffness: The Silent Culprit
Like most problems in the body, hip problems develop gradually. The hip joint stiffens slowly, often unnoticed, until pain sets in. This pain can then radiate to other areas, causing back pain, knee pain, or foot pain. This means a hip problem can cause problems elsewhere, or elsewhere can cause hip problems. This interconnectedness can make it challenging to diagnose the root cause.
A Comprehensive Approach to Hip Pain
At the Living Centre Clinic, we get to the root of the problem. This means we take a holistic approach in other words a complete bio-mechanical assessment of the lower limb. This includes observing your gait, examining your feet, knees, lower back, and of course, the hip joint itself. Only a comprehensive evaluation allows us to know what is really going on and crucially to find a way of stopping the pain coming back.
Osteopathy: Easing Pain and Restoring Function
Our osteopathic treatments are designed to address both the pain and the underlying dysfunction in the hip joint. We use a variety of techniques to achieve this, including:
- Soft tissue massage: This helps to release tension and stiffness in the muscles surrounding the hip joint, improving flexibility and reducing pain. The more supple a muscle is the better it can support and protect the joint. A tight muscle not only cant support the joint, it also becomes a source pain- whoch only serves to further tighten the muscle.
- Joint mobilisation: Small gentle movements are used to improve the range of motion in the hip joint. Movement is magic for the hip. Once we can get more movement back in the joint, things start to get faster better. When a joint moves, pain goes.
- Manipulation: In some cases, specific manipulation techniques may be used to restore proper joint alignment. These are very specific movements deigned to “lubricate” the joint, ie where the hip has been stiff for a long time. No “cracking” or violent forces are ever used.
Specialized Techniques for Enhanced Results
Where the lower back affects the hip, we utilise specialised treatment tables, not commonly seen in other clinics. These tables allow us to target specific muscles that bridge the lower back and the hip joint, providing significant pain relief and ease of movement again. We use work with electrotherapy devices to further release locked-in muscles and joints.
We manage knee and foot problems the same way. If these are “out” in any way, it can puts extra work higher up the chain, ie the hip. We have ways of identifying the most expeditious way of de-stressing the hip in such cases.
